Blackwater Falls State Park is located in the Allegheny Mountains of Tucker County, West Virginia, USA. The centerpiece of the park is Blackwater Falls, a 62-foot (19 m) cascade where the Blackwater River leaves its leisurely course in Canaan Valley and enters rugged Blackwater Canyon. It is among the most photographed venues in the state and appears on calendars, stationery, and advertisements. The river is named for its tannin-darkened water.Using our international travel planner, Davis attractions like Blackwater Falls State Park can form part of a personalized travel itinerary.
Blackwater Falls State Park reviews
We made our way through the three or so viewing areas. The waterfall was great to watch at every stop. Leaves and needles help turn the water an amber color, which adds to the beauty of the falls... more »
If you’re in the area, these falls are worth a visit. They aren’t all that big but they look pretty and the hike down is not difficult. more »
The main Falls are especially amazing in the bright sunshine of a spring day where there is excessive water flow where you can truly see in every droplet the brown tannins that give it its name. The summertime gives delightful detail to the constant flow with a central plume being the rich brown color. It is a wonderful Creeks to explore with your feet wet and the surrounding trails at the lodge are amazingly delightful with the combination of rocks and foliage. Do you take sack lunch and head up onto a large outcropping for a peaceful munch. The Overlook were you drive a little bit to reach is an outstanding View and again a very peaceful sense of the world. I have not camped there yet but would look forward to that.
The falls are beautiful and hiking, cross-country skiing and biking opportunities are numerous. If you have a mobility disability, there's a very easy paved path to a viewing area for the falls. Overlooks provide views of the canyon and wildlife abounds. The campground has two loops - one with electric sites, the other without. There are no water/sewer hookups. While the sites in the electric loop are spacious, the sites in the nonelectric loop are more wooded and private. The campground is clean and well-maintained but the bathhouse could use some sprucing up. When we visited, there were lots of dogs, mostly well-behaved.
