Fred Herz was camping in the Canaan Valley in 1985, while sitting by a camp fire, staring up at a mountain he thought that it would be a great place to ski. He convinced his entire family to buy into his idea and create Timberline Four Seasons Resort. in 1986 Timberline opened for business. Fred is a true visionary.Choose to start, finish, or center your holiday on a trip to Timberline Mountain by using our Davis online travel route planner.
Today we are proud to state that we have the longest trail south of Vermont, the highest average vertical in the SE, and the best glade skiing south of New England. Our ski school accommodates skiers of all ages, and we have a program for guest with disabilities to be able to get out and enjoy our slopes.
Our most proud accomplishment, however, is in helping preserve the highlands ecosystem. The Cheat Mountain salamander, a threatened species that is unique to West Virginia, may have a shot at recovery, thanks to conservation efforts that are underway at Canaan Valley National Wildlife Refuge.

What a fantastic ski resort! The Lodge is updated and welcoming, washrooms clean and modern, rental equipment new and in excellent condition. Every aspect of the operation is efficient, and the staff friendly and helpful. New chairlifts, excellent slope grooming and snow-making capabilities... Timberline truly has mastered the skiing experience. We booked a room in the slope-side hotel, but only four person rooms were available for our family of six. But when we arrived, we saw that our room had been upgraded, without charge, to a room that sleeps six. So grateful the staff was watching for a larger room to become available and then gave it to us. The room was clean and spacious and very convenient near the chair lifts. Timberline gets my highest recommendation!

I am 31 and have never been skiing until January. My bf convinced me to give it a try and boy I hated it. The staff was fantastic. From checking in, to picking out poles, and skis to use, they were nice and helpful the entire time. If I could give them additional stars I would. I started on the beginners trail and fell on my face more times that I could count. ANYWAY - I decided against my better judgment to try a bigger slope - I paid for a lift ticket I was gonna use it! Not sure how I made it down the Salamander trail but was terrified after the fact and I own it! I decided skiing was not for me. While taking a breather to regain my mental I realized my car keys had broke from the clasp. The staff looked for my keys with no judgement and seemed to enjoy the task. We were stranded at the snow resort. After some family help we got home but without those lost keys. I called 2 months later and these magic people found my car keys and mailed them to me. I called 2x during those 2 months and each and every time the staff were fantastic.
