#2 of 23 in Museums in Denver
A million reflective glass tiles, and numerous oddly shaped steel and titanium structures of Denver Art Museum, guard 68,000 art pieces from all over the world. The museum is well known for its Native American collection, and pre-Columbian and Spanish Colonial art objects. You will see sculptures, drawings, jewelry, and textiles from Africa and the Pacific islands, as well as Asian arts and crafts. Fifty-five hundred pieces from the Americas are preserved here. Apart from winning numerous awards for its collections, the museum has also been included in USA Today's list of family-friendly museums, where kids can play and learn through projects and workshops. • We rode the bus downtown and made a day out of it. The bus driver was very helpful and courteous. He gave us good information on the bus tickets. He gave us a day ticket good for all that day until 3 am that morning. It was only 2.60 for our trip downtown. If you drive downtown parking is 10.00 to 15.00 for ten hours of parking. When we got to the Art Museum we found out it is being remodeled. But a small part of the museum was open. So we went in and had an enjoyable time. They had a model of the new Art Museum. It will not be completed until 2023. I hope I can still get around then. I can hardly wait to see the new and improved Art Museum.
  • We went on free Saturday and we are so glad we did! This place is huge and they have a lot of different children's activity areas spread throughout the exhibits. There were book readings, craft sections, scavenger hunt papers, and much more. It's definitely kid friendly (on free Saturday, anyway) and you can stay for several hours and still not see it all.
  • Interesting modern/contemporary art pieces, well curated museum overall (coming from an art laywoman). Also had the chance to be in a free guided tour focusing on animals in art by a volunteer, Vicky. She was very enthusiastic and made the tour rather dynamic, entertaining and very interactive. It was a very different experience from other museum tours where you usually get facts about the art and artists, instead here we got to create our own stories for the pieces we viewed. After the tour, still had a nice time appreciating other exhibitions including one about Ganesha and another on photography. The only thing I had wished there was more of was native American art. In that space I did particular enjoy Buffalohead's contemporary pieces.
  • I have spent A LOT of time in this museum over the last 20 years, and I love it. They have a really lovely permanent collection, but they also bring in some lovely temporary exhibitions. We saw a landscape photography exhibition there in July 2018 that was gorgeous--I wish we could go back. So I recommend that you go see whatever they have on view, even if it isn't a big name or someone you recognize.
  • Watching this museum "grow up" has been fun. An interesting an diverse collection of art from many cultures and a sampling of classic and modern art. Also a lot of interesting hands on activities for all ages. Currently doing some major work on the North Wing, so what you can see is limited (summer, 2018).
