Mount Evans, Denver

#2 of 242 in Nature in Colorado
Mountain · Nature / Park
Towering 4,348 m (14,265 ft) above the Great Plains, Mount Evans serves as a symbol of the Denver skyline and the site of the highest paved road in North America. The peak represents one of Colorado's "fourteeners," mountains standing more than 4,267 m (14,000 ft) high. You can hike and drive along its extensive network of trails and roads. As you make your way to the summit, you'll be treated to sweeping views of the surrounding mountains and plains; keep an eye out for the occasional grazing buffalo. Take precautions before you go--the peak's extreme weather at the summit and its height can cause altitude sickness. • We drove about 2/3 of the way up, but unfortunately the road was closed just past the Echo Lake Store. Really enjoyed the drive and the store. Also has homemade goodies.  more »
  • Great drive except for 4-door 4-wheel drive pick-ups driven by speed demons. And hikers who cut across the switchbacks while their noses were buried in cell phones.  more »
  • An amazing trip up! Beautiful drive but unpredictable weather. Be sure to acclimate prior to heading to the top!
  • Awesome hike. Tough, always start counterclockwise wise
