Mount Evans, Denver

4.8
#1 of 249 in Nature in Colorado
Towering 4,348 m (14,265 ft) above the Great Plains, Mount Evans serves as a symbol of the Denver skyline and the site of the highest paved road in North America. The peak represents one of Colorado's "fourteeners," mountains standing more than 4,267 m (14,000 ft) high. You can hike and drive along its extensive network of trails and roads. As you make your way to the summit, you'll be treated to sweeping views of the surrounding mountains and plains; keep an eye out for the occasional grazing buffalo. Take precautions before you go--the peak's extreme weather at the summit and its height can cause altitude sickness. • We had done the drive 20 years ago in July and it was too foggy. We decided to go again near the end of the season on labor day weekend. If you live in CO, hike a smaller peak and avoid the crowds. It...  more »

  • Majorly scenic drive up to the top. Crazy high up there. I love being above the tree line. The absence of plants and ample oxygen really makes you feel like you've made it somewhere epic. Highly recommend. Oh, and the mountain goats were a big surprise.
  • The road to the top isn't as nice as Pikes peak, but still a nice drive. Once you get to the parking lot at the top there is a nice hike to the summit. It's rocky and can be wet so you should be careful. The views from the summit are spectacular. Definitely worth the time if you are in the area. It's probably about a three hour excursion. If you want to cheat, take a can of Boost oxygen. Especially if you are from sea level. At 14000ft there is like half the oxygen in the air and you will notice it. The canned oxygen will get rid of the headaches and feeling like you are going to vomit for at least a little while. If you don't need it, great! But it can turn a bad experience into a good one.
