The Belle Isle Aquarium is a public aquarium located in Belle Isle Park in Detroit, Michigan. Designed by noted architects George D. Mason and Albert Kahn, it opened on August 18, 1904, and was the oldest continually operating public aquarium in North America when it closed on April 3, 2005. The aquarium reopened to the public on August 18, 2012, and is now run entirely by volunteers. The 10,000-square-foot (930 m2) historic building features a single large gallery with an arched ceiling covered in green glass tile to evoke an underwater feeling.
The aquarium was operated by the Detroit Zoological Society prior to the 2005 closure. It is currently operated by the Belle Isle Conservancy.

  • Was a very beautiful place, we had an absolute great time there. It was our first time so we didn't get a chance to see everything but the nature center and aquarium were awesome. Even had a scavenger hunt for the kids. Many places to rest, eat and play. Views of the lake were gorgeous! Will be going back because of all the wild life and scenery!!
  • Beautiful aquarium, like stepping back in time. This is must visit when you come to Detroit. The city is truly on the up swing for the first time in decades and Belle Isle is definitely a part of this resurgence. Well maintained, it is the jewel on the island. Classic Art Deco styling its like stepping back in time. Tons of fish to view, beautiful gardens and it’s free! Only issue is they do not have air conditioning so it can get very humid in the summer with only fans.
