Cross and Peters company was founded on August 1st, 1930. The company was named after the founders' first names, Cross and Peter. Both set goals to make a better potato chip hence the brand name, Better Made Potato Chips. In 1934, the company was incorporated by the founders, the late Peter Cipriano and the late Cross Moceri.

Better Made became not only a brand name but a way of doing business. Even in the early days of the company, only the best ingredients and methods were used. At first, production was simple. Burlap bagged select potatoes were cooked in the best oil available, weighed, and hand packed into crude greaseless bags. Distribution was chiefly through the company's own store outlets which later grew into small delivery routes.

Today, however, Better Made uses 40 million pounds of choice potatoes every year and the entire process is a little more complex. The potatoes are purchased in bulk (45,000 to 85,000 pounds per truck load) and unloaded from delivery trucks which are lifted by a hydraulic lift. The potatoes are then dumped into storage bins where they are later peeled, sliced, and washed by the most modern equipment available. Next, the potato slices are conveyed to high temperature controlled cookers where only 100% cottonseed oil is used. The cooked chips are then lightly salted and automatically advanced by an overhead conveyor system to automatic packaging machines that weigh, form, fill, and seal the finished bags.

Better Made Potato Chips uses all natural resources and are untouched by human hands from the time the potatoes leave the farm until you bring the crunchy chips to your mouth. When you add Better Made's line of best selling seasoned potato chips such as Bar-B-Q, Red Hot, Sour Cream and Onion, Salt and Vinegar, and the brand new Sweet Bar-B-Q, you have the best snacks for any occasion.

Better Made's 70 years of progress have all been made in Detroit using Michigan potatoes for eight months of the year and drawing from Mother Nature's harvest schedule in Florida, Alabama, North Dakota, Minnesota, or wherever the best potatoes are available for the remainder of the year.

  • Great Service! So we decided to stop by and take a look inside. My daughter had never been to the factory like I did as a child growing up. She was so happy to go inside. We were greeted by Ebony who was behind the counter. She spoke when we came in the door. Explained prices to us. She was smiling and happy to help us. She provided Excellent customer service! Thank you! You Rock! They had lots to choose from and the place was clean. They even have a Better Made Chip on the wall where you can take a picture. How cool is that! I brought my No Salt chip bag which was $1.40 for a big bag. That's way better than the store price. Looking forward to coming again soon. Thank you Better Made! It's nice to come back to places you went to when you were a child.
  • I love the Detroit Mix. I can't stop eating almost the entire bag in one sitting. I would love to have more Carmel in the mix, too much cheddar.
