The Sweetest Heart of Mary Roman Catholic Church is located at 4440 Russell Street (at East Canfield Street) in Detroit, Michigan, in the Forest Park neighborhood on the city's central East side. The Gothic Revival cathedral styled church is the largest of the Roman Catholic churches in the City of Detroit. It was designated a Michigan State Historic Site in 1974 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978. It, along with St. Albertus Roman Catholic Church, 0.4 miles east on East Canfield Street, and St. Josaphat Roman Catholic Church, 0.3 miles west at East Canfield Street and Chrysler Drive, served the large Polish community through most of the twentieth century. In a diocesan reorganization instituted by Archbishop Allen Vigneron in 2013, Sweetest Heart of Mary joined with St. Josephat to form Mother of Divine Mercy Parish.Make your Detroit itinerary with Inspirock to find out what to see and where to go.
Sweetest Heart of Mary Roman Catholic Church reviews
Attended Saturday afternoon Mass at Sweetest Heart of Mary and it was a joy. The stained glass is wonderful even though we couldn't read the inscriptions because we don't speak Polish! Built in 1893..... more »
These dinners are the BOMB. Get there early. Not because there is a line to get in, but they can run out of food. Great seating with strangers. Cheap beer and pop. Great food. Worth the trip for... more »
What a beautiful church! The food was fantastic and the food was absolutely delicious! I took my family for the perogi festival in August. The festival was lots of fun. There was live music, a polka band. The good vendors sold a variety of Polish specialties. The was also a kids play area and several vendors selling Polish apparel. The only reason I didn't give a 5 is because of the potato pancake fiasco. The sweet older ladies took my money and gave me the number 81. Well, the people making the pancakes were at 51. Over an hour later, chaos ensued and some tempers started flaring. At that point I told my girls that we were leaving. I wasn't there for drama and I considered the money a church donation at that point.
So beautiful, a wonderful historic church that felt very warm and peaceful. A must see if traveling please go and support this church so it survives for many generations. The church is dedicated to Mary and clearly you can feel her influence here, our brief stay made a lasting impression on me. I love this church.
