Perched on the hills above the Connecticut River, Gillette Castle State Park features an early 20th-century mansion and a series of lakeside walking trails. Here you'll find the crumbling former glory of actor William Gillette's medieval-looking residence, built of stone and surrounded by thick forest. You can wander the grounds, which are ideal for easy walks, thanks to pathways made from former railroad tracks. Explore the "castle" itself to see a great number of carved oak woodworks and creative features, such as built-in couches and a sliding table. Gillette Castle State Park reviews
We were in the area and stopped. The castle and the grounds are beautiful. It was sprinkling the day we went and we were the only 2 at the park. Due to COVID the castle itself is closed but there are.... more »
Truly quite a unique building. Very interesting and lots of fun. Large outdoor areas where we packed a lunch and ate in the lawn. more »
A very unexpected surprise in a good way. As a non history buff, I yawn at the sound of history. However, I was shocked and actually enjoyed learning about the castle's history. While reading about the Gillette castle state park, I saw the numerous positive reviews but wasn't expecting it to be as good as it sounded. The park itself was amazing. There are lots of pathways to walk and beautiful bridges and ponds. There are also picnic tables to allow you to eat and enjoy the scenery. The visitor center has videos and lots of fun information about the original owner and creator of the castle.
Beautiful park. Well managed and clean. Had an awesome time in the castle seeing all the unique items. Trails were fun to walk on. We had brought our own food and had lunch on the grounds. They had provided a wonderful play outside called "The Professor" written by Gillette. I would recommend this State Park to everyone.
