Located within the town of Ekalaka, this little known museum houses significant paleontological discoveries from Carter County as well as numerous artifacts depicting the lives of Native Americans and the early settlers of the area.

The Carter County Museum was founded in 1936 through the efforts of Walter H. Peck and the Carter County Geological Society. Constructed of petrified wood and locally quarried sandstone, this unique museum also holds the honor of being the first county museum founded in Montana.

Open year round with free admission, CCM is a great starting point on the Montana Dinosaur Trail.

  • Awesome local museum. The dinosaur display was great. Lots of other things to see also. They have a Dino Shindig at the end of July. Sounds like it will be fun.
  • Super wonderful fossil and geologic displays. Walked around the t-rex and taxidermist displays multiple times and saw something different each pass! 9year old also liked seeing the old guns and bullet types. One room of Native American weapons and crafts included atlatl and arrowheads. Great staff too!
