The Ruthmere Foundation, Inc. owns and operates the home of Elkhart's founder, the 1848 Havilah Beardsley House, and Ruthmere, the region's premier 1910 Beaux Arts mansion. Today they stand as cornerstones of community history; architectural icons of a time gone by.

The Ruthmere Foundation, Inc. offers valuable opportunities to the community. These include significant history, elegant architecture, a world-class fine arts collection, and programs that bring stories of our community's past to life in meaningful ways. You can be a part of keeping these stories alive for many years to come.

The industry and careful stewardship of the Beardsley's led to an endowment for the community that we enjoy in many ways today: Ruthmere and its outstanding collections, including works that rival those held in much larger museums found in our nation’s major cities, are easily accessible to area residents; an Arts Reference Library; carefully tended gardens that provide a welcome respite in the city; a venue for special events and weddings ; and most importantly, strong educational programs for learners of all ages.

  • So awesome to time travel and see what it was like back then. Lots of things in the house are originals! Gorgeous interior and striking exterior. Paige was our tour guide and answered a lot of our tough questions. Good find for our little weekend getaway!
  • Well worth the money! This place is such a gem. So much to learn and so much to see. Our docent was very knowledgeable and it's clear he enjoyed talking about the mansion and is passionate about what he does. He gave us excellent presentation on the tour. There is such artistry and craftsmanship in every inch of the house. This is an artist's and a history buff's paradise. Every room in the house is so unique. I hope to go back again sometime!
