North American Bear Center, Ely

#1 of 20 in Things to do in Ely
Bears have been unfairly demonized for centuries. Exaggerated perceptions of danger historically led to eradication campaigns using bounties, poison, trapping, and shooting. All eight bear species around the world are now listed as vulnerable, threatened or endangered in all or portions of their ranges. Remote habitats that once insured isolation and protection are now being occupied by people, and the attitudes of these people will determine the future of those populations.

  • Educational fun morning. Worth the visit! Informative tour & enjoyed browsing the displays inside. I learned more about bears in an hour here than I had in my previous 53 years.  more »
  • This is a great place to learn about bears. You do get to see the feeding of the Bears which is not exactly in the wild. But there are lots of videos that of bears in the wild. The live bears keep the...  more »

  • This is a very cool place to visit. You should be able to see a bear in a very real natural environment like you wouldn’t really see at a zoo or something. The bears come in to eat and it’s fun to see them move through the wooded areas with ease. Amazing how quiet they are and how big they can be. Museum inside is decent but you’ll be wanting to watch the bears thru the glass or go out on the balcony. Also check out the Wolf Center. You can buy a pass for both to save money if you have time.
  • Great place to visit, with a very friendly and knowledgeable staff. Things of great information on bears and more. We were able to see 3 out of the 4 bears on our tour up close. The bears are all very healthy and very well taken care of. It's nice to see how well they interact with each other and how different their personality is from one another. You could spend hours there going over all of the best information. It's amazing how much research Lynn Rogers has done over the years. I've followed him for many years since I first heard his research. I wish the state would side with and his years of research of studying bears. Make sure you go for a walk around the grounds outside of the bear center. If you go to the bear center and the international wolf center in one day, you will get a discount on admission.
