Wandering around Eugene, I stumbled into Down to Earth. Friendly, knowledgeable staff, and a wonderful assortment of kitchen items. I left with a new proofing basket and salt and pepper grinding set. more »
one of my all time favorite places.
The company's mantra since its inception is 'We sell only useful and practical products ' Which is an understatement in large. In this , another Uniquely Eugene establishment, you'll find hand made goods from the Himalayas, to in house designed and manufactured highly acclaimed Premium Organic planting soil mixes and amendment's , Pet foods and care products, to a complete kitchen supply depot including the full line of Lodge Cast Iron skillets, Dutch ovens, and hard to find Abel skewer's cooking pans to make your own Norwegian delights at home, just like those only found at the Scandinavian Festival held annually in Junction City, the neighboring town to the north that LOVES Eugene's money, but not much else about it, they being the official imaginary line of demarcation where OSU Beaver country begins, and Oregon Ducks fans start keeping an extra eye over their shoulder!... just in case, you understand.. One of the two retail stores Down to Earth maintains in Eugene, their retail market is the smaller arm of their company, as they have an large wholesale distribution business, with regional weekly company truck delivery to WA and Northern California south to Monterey, East as far as Grass Valley. They supply every hi brow hippie kitchen shop, health food store, co-op, grow shop, nursery, other makers of organic soil mixes and amendments such as Fox Farms of Arcadia, CA. Organic grocery outlets such as Rainbow Grocery in San Francisco, to Whole Foods throughout the SF Bay area are among their coveted customers. And, if you are lucky, you might just rub shoulders with an admitted famous fan of their store, local resident, Sam Elliott of Hollywood fame, as he explained in a recent news paper interview. Truly, an honorable testament of the particularly discerning shopper. Quality made, green qualified products abound in this bright, exciting store. While employed as the driver for the Southern route 16 years ago, I will always maintain that they were the best people I have ever worked with. The pay and benefits were second to none, with highly screened fellow employees that were professional and a joy to work with. A great company to trade with and work for. They offer free seminars and classes most weekends on topics from home canning and food preservation, to permiculture, compost demonstrations , and many other interesting and informative events featuring local experts.
