Learn the history of gold mining in Alaska and become a prospector for a day at Gold Dredge 8. The gold that the dredge excavated between 1928 and 1959 was a major contributor to the Alaskan economy. A tour of the dredge starts with a train ride on a reconstructed narrow-gauge railway. Along the way you will see the modern Trans-Alaska Pipeline. Once at the dredge, you can learn about the everyday life of the miners, explore the equipment, and learn how to pan for gold yourself. Each visitor is provided with a bag of pay dirt that holds a small amount of gold. You can exchange gold for a piece of jewelry at a local store.
