Learn the history of gold mining in Alaska and become a prospector for a day at Gold Dredge 8. The gold that the dredge excavated between 1928 and 1959 was a major contributor to the Alaskan economy. A tour of the dredge starts with a train ride on a reconstructed narrow-gauge railway. Along the way you will see the modern Trans-Alaska Pipeline. Once at the dredge, you can learn about the everyday life of the miners, explore the equipment, and learn how to pan for gold yourself. Each visitor is provided with a bag of pay dirt that holds a small amount of gold. You can exchange gold for a piece of jewelry at a local store.   • Great fun place to do hands on gold panning. You will find gold flakes guaranteed. If you dont get many, just tell staff and they will give you another bag to pan. You can take your gold and buy a nice jewelry item to display it. Fun keepsake to remember a nice experience from Alaska.
  • I liked it. The panning is cool but it's got to be staged. I'm fairly certain they reuse the stuff in the troughs and just add some flakes to it. All of the gold flakes I saw were uniform in size. It's still a good experience! Cheapest cans of pop you will find too!
