#1 of 60 in Trails in Massachusetts
Must see · Biking Trail · Nature / Park
The 17.2 km (10.7 mi) Shining Sea Bikeway is named after a phrase in the song "America the Beautiful" as portions of it hug the ocean. The trail runs on an abandoned railroad path near woods and coastline scenery, past lakes, marshes, and quaint houses. Originally established in 1975, the bikeway has been improved, extended, and paved throughout its entire length. The path is suitable even for beginners or a casual cyclists, as it's mostly level with only a slight occasional grade. On your ride, you'll see cranberry bogs and typical Cape Cod plant life. Stop and have a picnic on the beach, or snap photos of birds at the salt pond. The path can get busy; be sure to respect bicycle rules and watch for inline skaters and runners as well. • Great views from salt mashes, cranberry bogs, to ocean views. There are some places to stop along the path for food or ice cream but you can also just go directly into Woods Hole.  more »
  • This is an excellent way to see the sites of Falmouth and get some exercise. The trail was smooth and wide enough for 2. Other users were courteous and road crossings were easy to navigate.  more »
