Amelia Island Lighthouse, Fernandina Beach

The Amelia Island Light is the oldest existing lighthouse in the state of Florida in the United States. It is located near the northern end of Amelia Island in the northeastern part of the state. Its light marks St. Marys Entrance, the inlet leading to St. Marys River, the Cumberland Sound and the harbor of Fernandina Beach, Florida along the Amelia River. The white light flashes every ten seconds which turns red from 344° to 360° when covering the shoal water in the vicinity of Nassau Sound. The lighthouse is listed as number 565 in the United States Coast Guard (USCG) light list.HistoryThe lighthouse was built in 1838 using materials taken from the former Little Cumberland Island Light on Cumberland Island in Georgia just north of the inlet, which was built in 1820. The brick tower was originally tall placed on a hill. In 1881, a lantern was installed on the tower increasing the tower height to with the focal plane height of above sea level. The tower was originally equipped with 14 lamps each with a 14in reflector when first lit in 1839. The reflector size was increased to by 1848. This arrangement was replaced by a third-order Barbier Benard Fresnel lens in 1903, which is still used in the lighthouse.

  • This required some driving through residential neighborhoods to see this. Limited times. Special permission required. But we could see it through the gates. Also could see it from across the estuary. ...  more »

  • Not a great deal of information here. We did not go into the Coast Guard auxiliary building however. Don't be discouraged if you do not immediately find the building either, it is well hidden, for a light house.
  • I'm a lover of lighthouses and give it 4 stars only because of accessibility. You can't drive up to it after hours. You encounter a locked gate in a residential area of Fernandina Beach. You also can't get a clear photo for the trees. The 4 pics I took were from behind the locked chain-link gate.
  • You can only get in I'm a very limited time frame but it is a nice location in a beautiful beach
  • Unless you schedule a tour, you can't go into the lighthouse. It was pretty! We snapped a few selfies and took some nice photos but wish we could have gone inside. There is ONE picnic table and a small bit of grass if you wanna have lunch there. There's not anything else...
  • This place is a bit hard to find and its open on a certain days of the week only. But still worth to visit. Wish they open and have daily tours too.
