The Arboretum at Flagstaff is an 200-acre (81 ha) arboretum that is home to 750 species of mostly drought-tolerant adapted and native plants representative of the high-desert Colorado Plateau, home to the Grand Canyon and Zion National Park. It is located 3.8 miles (6.1 km) south of U.S. Route 66 on Woody Mountain Road, on the west side of Flagstaff, Arizona, USA. The facility is located at 7,150' in elevation, making it one of the highest-elevation public gardens in the United States. The Arboretum has an extensive regional collection of the Penstemon genus and hosts an annual Penstemon Festival.
The Arboretum was originally forest and a working ranch, and the home of Frances McAllister in the late 1960s. She donated the land and created its financial endowment for the Arboretum in 1981. To support research the Arboretum is also home to the Merriam-Powell Research Station and Southwest Experimental Garden Array.

  • Beautiful flowers blooming everywhere, enjoyed bird watching and the butterfly pavillon. Got to see a duck and 10 ducklings on the pond. Enjoyed sitting on the bench looking at the trees and...  more »

  • Love it here, family friendly, beautiful place to come when in Flagstaff. My kids loved the nature bingo game and it made it more of an adventure. Got married here almost 10 years ago, they keep updating it and making it better for guests to learn and enjoy. We had a picnic here and the kids were soaking in the beauty of the forest. Dont forget the mushroom garden that has cute little gnomes everywhere.
  • It takes a little while to get to because you have to drive several miles on a hard pack and bumpy dirt road. There is not a lot to do and not much to see as the size of the place is not very big. I understand that they will be closing for the winter but most of the areas where there should be plants are empty. The front desk person was friendly and pleasant. They could do so much more with this arboretum to make it a place where you would want to visit if not frequently .
