  • Amazing forest, with mature longleaf pine / Wiregrass forest on surprisingly hilly terrain(for Florida). This forest is great place to get away from it all, with low traffic roads, lakes to paddle in and campgrounds that have been getting great improvements in the form of new bathroom buildings and fishing piers. The open forest roads are great shape, you can drive through gorgeous scenery and check out beaver dams, rivers and pitcher plant bogs. Great short hiking trails are Bear lake and Karick lake, and bear lake mountain bike trail is very nice and easy, smooth riding. If you have an stab or dirt bike, check out the Clear Creek OHV site, it has great trails, with the east trails being challenging while the west offer a more leisurely, scenic experience. Make sure to check out the Sweetwater trail, it connects Krul lake to Bear lake. It’s a short hike and is mostly boardwalk if you start from Krul lake. It features both a grist mill and an incredible suspension bridge over Sweetwater Creek(it’s more of river actually). Equestrians can camp at Coldwater campground, there’s ample camping and corrals/ paddocks for horses, plus it’s right on the river! There’s also parking for folks that just want to come ride for the day. Tip: download the georeferenced map from the Florida Forest Service website to your smartphone, for use in the Avenza app. It’s great for seeing wherever you are on the trail.
