Explore the world of soldiers on the American frontier at Fort Davis National Historic Site. Discover the history of the military outpost from Comanche, Kiowa, and Apache raids to the short-lived camel corps and the fort's importance during the Civil War. Start at the visitor center where you can watch a short orientation film, then explore the six restored and furnished 1880s-style buildings. The site features 20 unrestored buildings and 100 ruins, which you can wander around as you keep your ears tuned for recordings of bugle calls and the sounds of an 1875 dress retreat parade, which are played at various times throughout the day. The site also offers hiking trails. To visit Fort Davis National Historic Site and other attractions in Fort Davis, use our Fort Davis online tour builder.

  • Cool buildings to explore. Loved the trumpet songs that played while you are walking around looking at the buildings.  more »
  • Hiked to the fort from Davis Mountains State Park. My wife had a problem with her foot and was not able to hike back. It was approaching closing time and I would not be able to retrieve our vehicle.....  more »

  • Beautifully kept facility, restoration of historic buildings and artifacts kept the true integrity to the period and transfix you another time....1849-1895. Just incredible and full of history and stories of both the wild west and civil wars. The park attendant in the visitors center knows his stuff and was friendly, happy and helpful to everyone with their questions. Take a good 2 hrs if you can carve it out and walk the buildings, ruins, and museums.
  • We came later in the day during off season. Park is very educational. Lots of walking so be prepared but if you love history you will love this. They are continuing to restore various parts of the park to continue the educational aspect. It really is a beautiful location as well. Makes you feel like you're in the frontier days. Would love to come sometime when they have the interactive events, people playing the parts etc.
