Explore the world of soldiers on the American frontier at Fort Davis National Historic Site. Discover the history of the military outpost from Comanche, Kiowa, and Apache raids to the short-lived camel corps and the fort's importance during the Civil War. Start at the visitor center where you can watch a short orientation film, then explore the six restored and furnished 1880s-style buildings. The site features 20 unrestored buildings and 100 ruins, which you can wander around as you keep your ears tuned for recordings of bugle calls and the sounds of an 1875 dress retreat parade, which are played at various times throughout the day. The site also offers hiking trails. To visit Fort Davis National Historic Site and other attractions in Fort Davis, use our Fort Davis online tour builder.

  • A great fort, well preserved. Very walkable. Plan minimum 2 hours. Set against the Davis Mountains. Walkable from downtown Fort Davis., a friendly western town.

  • Would love to have toured the Fort in it's entirety, but some was closed due to COVID, and limited disabilities really hurt us
  • A gem of history and outdoor exploration in Fort Davis. Great site to visit for American history but also amazing little short trails and picturesque photo ops in nature. We loved the few hours we had to spend here and the history lessons we got on the property. A must stop for civil war history buffs and outdoors adventure types alike.
