The A.E. Backus Museum & Gallery, an 8,000 sq. ft. public visual arts facility, was established in 1960 by A.E. Backus and a group of local art enthusiasts. Open five days a week from October through mid-June (summer hours by appointment) the Museum features the nation's largest display of original paintings by Albert Ernest Backus (American 1906–1990). The Museum is also home to Florida's only permanent multimedia exhibition on the Florida Highwaymen. In addition to preserving and perpetuating the artistic and humanitarian legacy of Backus, the Museum organizes and hosts changing exhibitions from artists of national and international acclaim. Located in Historic Downtown Fort Pierce, the Museum is a worthwhile stop on any visitor’s itinerary. Very interesting history about a local artist from the 50's and 60's. Tells the story of the Highway Men artists during that time.

Beautiful museum filled with stunning paintings of Old Florida landscapes. (Ask one of the volunteers about some of the history of A.E. Backus if you get a chance!) You can buy a print or souvenir from the shop inside!

Small, intimate art museum of "Bean" Backus and the Highway Men. Beautiful landscape paintings of Florida.
