Motts Run Reservoir Recreation Area, Fredericksburg

Gorgeous place to kayak, fish, picnic, hike, or bike. I've kayaked here once and it was a nice experience, especially if you're a beginner. I'm more interested in their trails, however. There's lots of separate trails that connect so definitely have a map on you. There's a bike trail that goes all the way around the lake, too, and according to the map on their website it's open to hikers as well. For bikers, you'll want to park at the gate. All the other trails are further down near the lake.

This place is really awesome for mountain biking and kayaking. The biking is not crazy difficult but challenging. Mostly it is smooth single track s-turning through the trees. Very fun! The reservoir itself it not huge but it is plenty large enough to have fun in a boat. Lots of wildlife - we got surprisingly close to a great blue heron and saw a water snake swimming by us while in the kayaks. The staff told us there have been many sightings of a very large turtle that they thought might be as much as 50lbs. Be forewarned - make sure you are off the water and outside the gate by the 7pm close. They actually lock the gate exactly at 7pm no exceptions. If you are just mountain biking and parked above the gate you are ok no matter what time you leave.
