Skyline Caverns, Front Royal

4.3
Discovered in 1937 near the opening of the Skyline Drive, the Skyline Caverns have welcomed tours since 1939.

A knowledgeable guide will escort you though the Caverns, explaining the geological history while challenging your imagination; making your tour educational, exciting, and entertaining.

This geologically "young" cavern is still alive and active today. The dripping of water you find throughout the Caverns is a reminder of this constant growth, the beauty of which is shared with thousands of wide-eyed visitors each year.

A limited tour group size along with award winning lighting systems allow you to enjoy the splendor of The Capital Dome, Rainbow Trail, The Painted Desert, The Wishing Well, The Grotto of Nativity, Cathedral Hall, The Shrine, Fairyland Lake, The Anthodities and much, much more. Included are three underground streams and 37-foot Rainbow Waterfall.

Above ground, Skyline Caverns offers two more attractions for all ages: the Skyline Arrow Miniature Train and the Enchanted Dragon Mirror Maze.

  • Our daughter wanted to stop on the way to Gettysburg from Luray. Yes, she has been to Luray the day before and I did not want to spend money on another cavern tour. WOW! I was glad I listened to her a...  more »
  • Definitely visit shortly before entering Skyline Drive. A very nice cave with highly recommended and very professional guidance. Also worth seeing are the light scenes in the cave. After that, definitely take a T-shirt, a shirt, hat or at least a magnet as a souvenir. Definitely visit.

  • Skyline Caverns was amazing! When you get there, there’s a rustic gift shop with memorabilia, shirts, sweatshirts, crystals, jewelry, etc.. some old photos to give you some history of the cave. When we arrived, we waited about 20 minutes for the next tour. I brought a sweatshirt as the temperature is a bit cooler inside the cave (~50°F), or you can buy one inside the shop. Our tour guide was very knowledgeable and funny. The entire tour lasts about 1 hour. You explore with the guide, and pause every few feet to understand the rock formations, ponds, gems and other interesting facts. He also turned on & off lights at various parts. Some areas were very steep, so wear sneakers or shoes with good traction. Also, some areas had low ceilings that you had to crouch down and some were spacious. I loved this adventure! Got some pretty cool photos too..
  • Staff was very friendly and courteous. Well kept and clean. Caverns were interesting an awesome experience and beautiful formations. Our tour guide Lily was very informative and lively. There were a few steep areas to walk through so if you have limitations in walking or climbing stairs I do not recommend the tour.
