Ulysses S. Grant Home is maintained as a museum and memorial to this Civil War hero and 18th president of the United States. A small group of local citizens purchased the Italianate house, built for a former city clerk, and presented it to Grant in appreciation of his war efforts. In addition to the Grant home, the site includes several mid-19th century houses known as the Grant Home Historic Neighborhood. A guide in period costume will escort you around the house, imparting history about Grant's life during the Civil War, his candidacy for presidency, and his years as president. Many of the artifacts and furnishings on display are the Grant family's accurately restored possessions. Plan your Ulysses S. Grant Home visit and explore what else you can see and do in Galena using our Galena journey planning website.

The tour is free but donations are recommended. Tours run about every 10 to 15 mins. You wait on the porch for a guide to get you. You can take all the photos you want. About 90 percent of the items in the home are original to the Grant family. Plenty of parking. When you are done here head downtown to see an amazing Main street that looks like a movie set from the old days and then head to the Grant/Galena museum. There is a charge as it is separate from the Grant home but very much worth visiting.

If you're a history buff. This is a must see. There's a lot of great history here. All of the tour guides are great. You can tell that they're really passionate about the history of this home. It's just a really nice place to visit. Make sure to bring cash, because they have some cool things you can purchase.
