Ulysses S. Grant Home is maintained as a museum and memorial to this Civil War hero and 18th president of the United States. A small group of local citizens purchased the Italianate house, built for a former city clerk, and presented it to Grant in appreciation of his war efforts. In addition to the Grant home, the site includes several mid-19th century houses known as the Grant Home Historic Neighborhood. A guide in period costume will escort you around the house, imparting history about Grant's life during the Civil War, his candidacy for presidency, and his years as president. Many of the artifacts and furnishings on display are the Grant family's accurately restored possessions. Plan your Ulysses S. Grant Home visit and explore what else you can see and do in Galena using our Galena journey planning website.

  • Was a walk through of Grant's House. The history about Grant and his family wants me to read about him. Going to look for the book that Mark Twain helped him write.

  • If you want a quick, convenient tour, this is it. No reservations necessary, just pop in for a 15-20 min tour with at most a 20 minute wait time. Knowledgeable volunteer staff leads you through...

  • It's a suggested donation of $5 per adult which we did (sorry, but I don't know the suggested amount for children). Donating wasn't an issue because the house is beautiful! The grounds are beautiful! Since it was a weekday, parking was easy to find right by the house! The staff is friendly and were able to answer even the most strange and remote of questions (of which I asked some really random ones)! The guides were able to also point us in the direction of even more information (train station) and even hidden goodies (famous or noteworthy people buried in the cemetery in Galena and Elizabeth)! Highly recommend coming here! Thank you for taking care of such a wonderful national treasure and having such sweet, knowledgeable staff!
  • It was not open the day we went. Saw the outside of the buildings
