One time school teachers, Rick and Maria Mamoser decided to forgo the long commute into the suburbs for a “simpler life” as business owners. Prairie State Mercantile opened at their current location in July, 1998. Selling finer goods, including wine, made exclusively in Illinois (The Prairie State), they were on the leading edge of the “keep it local” movement, winning multiple statewide awards for their concept.Make Prairie States Winery a centerpiece of your Genoa vacation itinerary, and find what else is worth visiting using our Genoa trip itinerary builder app.
Prairie State Winery soon followed (fall of 1999), expanding the concept by producing wines made exclusively from Illinois grown grapes. With their home winemaking experience, science background, and immersion into national wine curriculum, they soon started garnering many awards for their wines as well. With the first vintage of only 500 gallons to the most recent vintages of nearly 10,000 gallons, Rick and Maria continue to promote the philosophy of “Think Globally” with their added “Drink Locally” to boot.

Very good place to have a wine tasting with great food. The people there are really nice and talk in a very good way. I think the owner greeted us when we entered and showed us the table. We went on a Sunday so made sure we are at the right time they open. We tried the 4 glass wine tasting and it was so filling and great. The cheese platter was extremely good. We also ordered some food including a flat bread and a sandwich which we thought was not necessary. Overall it was a great experience and I would come here again

One of a kind winery experience! We thoroughly enjoyed celebrating a friend's birthday here. You can choose to have a wine flight or a tasting at your table with excellent sandwiches or delicious starters. Then shop the store for the favorite wine you tried during your meal. It's hard to pick up only one bottle because each label is designed by local artists and there's so many delicious wines to choose from.
