Gettysburg Museum & Visitor Center, Gettysburg

4.8
Famous for its 360-degree cyclorama painting of the climactic Confederate attack on the Union forces in 1863, Gettysburg Museum & Visitor Center houses a large collection of cannons, firearms, and uniforms from the American Civil War. Located on the site of one of the bloodiest episodes in American history, the museum contains over 40,000 war artifacts and highlights the history behind the cyclorama, painted by French artist Paul Philippoteaux. For a personal driving tour of the area, you can reserve a battlefield guide prior to your arrival who will tour the grounds with you. • An incredible place for anyone interested in American History. Very accessible and the rangers always have lots of good information and knowledge. You can get through the entire park in one day and have a good experience or you can take a deep dive and spend a few days there. I've been a half dozen times and always find something new.
  • Visiting the Gettysburg National Military Park is a truly unforgettable experience. You get to relieve one of the most important battles of the Civil War: the turning point, which decided history. The park is well maintained throughout and is a perfect destination regardless how much time you have. Driving through the historical sites and locations, learning about the battle's events and enjoying the scenery definitely worth a trip to Gettysburg.
  • This place was awesome! So cool to learn and see. Great library and section of books to buy from. Definitely go see the show, they run every 15 minutes. The food is good too in the little restaurant. Didn't like the pizza but the sandwiches and chicken fingers were good.
  • Absolute MUST visit. Price is reasonable. Admission includes a movie about the war, a cyclorama with dramatic narration and lights (canons going off and smoke appearing) and the museum with a ton of artifacts. Debated whether to go but so glad we did. Staff was very knowledgeable and answered all of our questions. Incredible. Took my breath away. Kids also enjoyed it very much.
  • Amazing park, full of history. You can get a battlefield guide to drive around with you, or just explore on your own. The museum at the visitor's center was not great. Lots of objects, often with little or no context (some might not know what the objects are or how they relate). The museum designers chose to use images not from Gettysburg, which is stupid. The battlefield itself is amazing and spread out. It's open until 10pm, so make plans to watch the sunset from Little Round Top.
