Shriver House Museum, Gettysburg

4.7
Visit Shriver House Museum to learn the story of the Civil War's Battle of Gettysburg through the lives of the Shriver family. The home has been restored to its 1860's appearance. You'll get an authentic look at how the battle affected the lives of the civilians of Gettysburg. Hettie Shriver, fearing for the safety of her young daughters, went to stay at the family's farm out of town, where some of the worst fighting took place. Guides in period clothing recount how Confederate soldiers quickly seized the empty house to set up a sharpshooter's nest. Notice the civil war bullets, some of which were still live when found in the attic in 1996. Inspirock's itinerary builder makes planning a Gettysburg trip simple and quick.

  • Great tour that focuses on the civilian perspective of the Gettysburg battle. Guides know their history and do a great presentation. We saw the special Christmas tour. Disclaimer: the step son is one of the tour guides.
  • The host was incredibly theatrical and enthusiastic. The history of the home and family are interesting and really project the struggles of the unknowing victims of innocent families of the time. One thing I'd like to mention. As I was admiring the artifacts of the original home I turned to a voice that belonged to an old women standing stoop shouldered. She said that they were her original belongings. I turned to look at something and when I looked back she was gone. Through the entire tour I never seen the old woman again.
