Kopachuck State Park is a publicly owned recreation area situated on Henderson Bay in Puget Sound, about west of the city of Gig Harbor, Washington. The state park's encompass over a mile of saltwater shoreline. The park provides sweeping views of sunsets, the Olympic Mountains and Puget Sound. Cutts Island, known locally as "Deadman's Island," which lies about a half-mile from the park shore, is reachable by boat. Both Kopachuck and Cutts Island are administered by the Washington State Parks and Recreation Commission.Put Kopachuck State Park on your schedule, and learn what else deserves a visit by using our Gig Harbor trip website.
The park bears a name whose origin derives from the language of the Chinook Tribe, a band of Pacific Coastal Indians. Kopachuck is a blend of two words: “kopa” meaning “at” and “chuck” meaning “water.” The Puyallup and Nisqually Indian Tribes used the area around the park for seasonal fishing and clam gatherings.
2009 proposed closureKopachuck was tagged for closure in 2009 by Washington Governor Chris Gregoire as part of budget cutbacks in the wake of hard economic times, prompting neighbors to rally to save the park.
Diseased treesIn 2011, it was found that many of the park's Douglas firs were diseased with laminated tree rot, one of the deadliest diseases a fir tree can contract. The campground was closed by park rangers soon after; the closure became permanent in 2014. In September 2011, many of the diseased trees were cut down due to increasingly urgent safety issues. In response, local artists created “Intertwined — Requiem for the Trees," which the artists said was to record the trees before their death. The piece was displayed in the Gig Harbor History Museum for a short time that fall.
Kopachuck State Park reviews
We randomly stopped here on our trip from Edmonds to Bellevue and we are glad we did. Wanted to get out the car and relax for a little while and let the kids swim and they had a blast not only... more »
Gorgeous, lush area with trails. Easy parking. Not many people the weekday we went, even with perfect weather. Sat on the beach a while and went in the water up to our thighs-warmer than expected... more »
Beautiful state park. Very lush and green plus access to the beach! Keep in mind, if you're looking for a challenging hike, this isn't the place to go. Despite that, the small hikes are beautiful and the beach is gorgeous. I definitely recommend going during low tide and wearing sandals or water shoes so your feet don't get cut up.
This park is flat out one of the most beautiful the area has to offer. It shows off everything that characterizes the Pacific North West. Happened to be here for Father's Day and the weather was incredible. The sunlight made for an enchanting hike down to a beach that view an island as well as the Olympic mountain range. Great place for picnics. Highly recommend for special occasions that coincide with the warmer months. Excellent clean well stocked restrooms too! I will be back with family in tow!
