St.Mary Falls, Glacier National Park

Waterfall · Nature / Park
Cascading over three separate tiers and dropping into emerald pools, St.Mary Falls remains a popular hiking destination between Baring Falls and more spectacular Virginia Falls. The flat rocks by the falls are perfect to take photos from or even bring a picnic. A wooden footbridge spanning across the narrow gorge offers a good spot to enjoy the cool breeze on a hot summer day. Keep an eye open for dippers foraging on the rocks and below the water surface. A well-traveled path to the falls mostly leads through a dense evergreen forest, but several openings along the way allow good views of the mountains. Note that parking can be difficult to find during the summer season; the alternative is to take a shuttle. • This is a short, easy hike, perfect for the little ones. The waterfall is pretty--and the bridge is well protected to keep kids from falling. A bit steep from the road down, but then easy.  more »

  • Great hike! Really beautiful scenery and not too difficult. Lots to see along the way so you can always turn back when kids are getting tired. My 3 year old was able to hike the entire thing so it’s definitely kid friendly if they are feeling up to it.
  • We booked the boat tour and ranger led hike to go out to St Mary Falls with our children. The boat ride was nice and the ranger was great, stopping a few places along the way to discuss different topics about the area. The falls were more impressive than they look in photos. Worth a visit.
