James River State Park, Gladstone

#55 of 100 in Nature in Virginia
James River State Park is a state park located along the James River in Buckingham County, Virginia. Opened June 20, 1999, it preserves part of the route of the Kanawha Canal in addition to portions of the river.

One of the many attractions at James River State Park is the park's more than 130 acres (0.53 km2) of native warm season grasses that blanket fields adjacent to the James River. These fields are maintained by periodic prescribed fire to facilitate growth of the native grasses. Very few areas of this size with warm season grasses still exist in the Eastern United States.

  • Been here twice. Once in April and again in July. The rangers are friendly and take the time to have conversations with you. The river was very fun to go down in tubes. We did the 2 mile stretch in the campground several times. There is a launch 9 miles up stream but it would have taken us 10 hrs to run. River was very slow moving. Bathrooms and showers are big and clean. Laundry room with 2 sets of washer and dryer. There are events for all ages starting Thursday and run through the weekend. It's cool to hear the rumble of the trains in the distance running down the track. (No horns) Campsites have water and electrical hookup. There's a dump site only at the entrance. Use water wisely. Trailer pads are crushed gravel with a fire ring and big picnic table. Plenty of room for slideouts and entertainment. Closest stores are in Appomattox which is about a 20 min drive.
  • Very nice park. Trailer sites are easy to back into. Few sites were pull thru and taken for longer stays. Sites are wide and mostly level with small stone gravel mixture. Lots of trees between everyone. Has boat ramp and trails. However, was most expensive park we have been in so far. $48
