Stretching 1.9 km (1.2 mi) into Glenwood Canyon, Hanging Lake Trail climbs more than 300 m (985 ft) to its namesake mountain lake. You'll wander along Colorado River tributaries, surrounded by sheer, rocky cliffs and lush forest. Stop for a rest at the top of the trail, where you'll find waterfalls and a clear blue lake home to trout. If you're feeling tired during the hike, take a breather at one of the rest spots along the way. The path is considered difficult because of its steep elevation and relatively rough terrain, so you should consider your health and skill level before attempting the hike. • Reminder to not believe reviews that it is an easy hike. Pretty challenging for anyone out of state and not used to altitude. Beautiful lake and highly recommended.

  • Hanging Lake was absolutely beautiful and definitely a must do hike if you are visiting in the area. Making it to the top is worthwhile!

  • Breathtakingly beautiful!!! Reservation required and no dogs allowed. Steep in some areas, loose pebbles/rocks in some areas. There are seven bridges to cross and the views along the way make the trail worth it. Wear good hiking shoes and trekking poles are helpful. It is a good workout but the reward at the end is worth it. Do not forget to go to the Spouting rock is on the left side of the lake.
  • We had a 7:30 permit with a 15min window on either side. The trail crosses several foot bridges and is only a mile and a half but the incline is 1,000 ft of elevation. Starting early meant a cool hike as we were down by 11. We waited until about 10am for the sun to hit the water and reveal the turquoise color. Take the additional short hike behind hanging lake to the big waterfall. Its only another 100 yards. Hiking poles helped and bring plenty of water and a snack.
