The Cape Ann Museum tells multiple stories, all relating to a single remarkable place. From its earliest days as a fishing and shipping port, to its mid-19th century role in the granite industry, to its singular charms of light and sea that have attracted countless artists from the 19th century to the present, Cape Ann boasts a rich and varied culture of nationally significant historical, industrial, and artistic achievement. The Museum's fine art collection includes the largest grouping of works by native son and renowned marine artist, Fitz Henry Lane, as well as work by other prominent painters and sculptors who lived on, visited or were inspired by Cape Ann. The work of contemporary Cape Ann artists is also collected and exhibited. The permanent collection includes fine and decorative arts, artifacts from the major industries of the area - the fisheries and granite quarrying, two historic houses and an extensive library and archives.

  • An extremely well curated museum focused the artistic heritage of the Cape Ann region. A worthwhile focus! This is a region with a genuine claim on our attention. The history of work (fishing and quarries) and immigration provide context that works well to hold our attention. We spent a bit over an hour in the galleries, saw a lot, left with more to see. We'll be back.
  • An outstanding museum focusing on what makes Gloucester unique. You can easily spend 2-3 hours here. I highly recommend taking advantage of a tour with a docent. The 60-minute tour was informative and engaging. After you are finished at the museum, walk toward the water a couple of blocks and you'll have plenty of great cafes and local shops to choose from.
