Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area is a United States 171,280 acres (69,310 ha) national recreation area in Kentucky and Tennessee between Lake Barkley and Kentucky Lake. It was designated as a national recreation area in 1963 by President John F. Kennedy and developed using funds appropriated during the Johnson administration.

Originally managed by the Tennessee Valley Authority, which constructed dams to create the two lakes in this area, the recreation area was later transferred to the administration of the United States Forest Service. In 1991, it was designated a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. President Donald Trump's administration withdrew it from the program as of June 2017.

  • Didn't see any bison, but a beautiful hike and drive, planetarium show was a great place to cool off and good exhibits in the museum.

  • We took a 3 hour drive to Land Between the Lakes so that we could check out the campgrounds before we plan our next year's vacations.. the scenery is beautiful!! And I hope someday we make it back.. unfortunately we were unable to drive through the main campground due to trick or treating... we did check out the smaller campgrounds there, and marked off ones that would be a good fit for our camper.. not all sites are level, or have much room at all..lots of trees and cliffs.. If your planning to travel there, I would definitely encourage you to check the sites out first. Hopefully this helps others..
  • Pretty cool national recreation area. Tons of things to do, hiking camping fishing scenic drives etc. They have an enclosed area with bison and elk. Nice campgrounds ohv areas and scenic overlooks on the lakes. This is an area affected by the Tennessee valley authority creating dams and flooding rivers to create lakes and displacing the people that lived there.
