Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area is a United States national recreation area in Kentucky and Tennessee between Lake Barkley and Kentucky Lake. It was designated as a national recreation area in 1963 by President John F. Kennedy.

Originally managed by the Tennessee Valley Authority, which constructed dams to create the two lakes in this area, the recreation area was later transferred to the administration of the United States Forest Service. In 1991, it was designated a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. President Donald Trump's administration withdrew it from the program as of June 2017.

  • The scenery is gorgeous. There are several campgrounds and picnic areas. We saw a lot of bison & elk at the preserve. The visitor centers were convenient and staff informative about the area!

  • This is a must visit if you are in the area. It is well worth the drive. There is a lot of history in this area. The preserve with the elk and bison is well worth the $5 charge to get into the gate.

  • We love to camp but this was our first time with a camper. We got in late, it was dark, and we were struggling. The staff was very friendly and helpful! They were accommodating even though it was not their fault. The park was very clean and beautiful! We definitely will be back.
  • The whole area is beautiful and offers all kinds of outdoor recreation opportunities from hiking and wildlife viewing to trail riding for jeeps and dirt bikes. I personally prefer to explore the side roads and haven't been over to Turkey Bay yet but I think that's the next stop for me.
