Nestled at the base of the Rocky Mountains in Golden, Colorado, the Bradford Washburn American Mountaineering Museum opened its doors in February 2008 to be America’s first and only museum dedicated to the heroism, technology, culture and spirit of mountaineering.

This one-of-a-kind facility will allow visitors to live the ascent of the world’s most inspiring mountains through educational displays, interactive exhibits, breathtaking photos and climbers’ personal stories that enrich the visual experience, and one of the world’s largest libraries dedicated to mountaineering research and education. From children to weathered climbers, all visitors will find something to inspire their life’s journey. Jump a crevasse, hang out in a port-a-ledge and find your route up Mt. Everest!

The 3,500-square-foot museum is a joint partnership of the Colorado Mountain Club and the American Alpine Club.

  • For us, this Museum is a delight. It has nice exhibits of mountaineering throughout the world and Colorado. Great descriptions of the early U.S. trips to climb big mountains in Nepal and elsewhere...

  • Surprisingly good museum about mountain climbing across the world. Liked the information about Colorado mountain climbing not being from this state. Two small film rooms are worth the time, but...

  • We've lived in Denver for 8 years and have been to all the museums we can find. But we always thought that this museum didn't apply to us as we're not involved in mountaineering. But today we thought we'd give it a try and it was great! It's located in the old Golden High School, which in itself is a treat to visit. The front door on the south side is not the entrance - you have to walk around to the door on the west or north side. Their are no employees. You check in at a kiosk, use a tablet to pay with credit card, or put cash in a box - genius! We spent about an hour looking at the exhibits and watching several interesting videos about amazing climbing treks. You can't miss the scale model of Mt Everest! We loved it!
  • A must visit for any mountaineering enthusiast or veteran. See famous artifacts from mountaineerings finest, and read stories of their feats and tragedies.
