The Market House Museum is a Texas Historic Landmark.

Designated a State Archeological Landmark in May 1981.

The site was dedicated to public use in 1853. During the early 1870s a market built here by the City of Goliad contained 12ft. by 24ft. stalls which were rented to meat and produce vendors.

In 1886 it became a firehouse with a meeting hall and room for the hook and ladder equipment and firewagons. A bell was purchased in 1890 for $45 to ring the night hours and sound alarms. The Goliad Volunteer Fire Department was based here until 1964.

The building was restored in 1967 by Goliad Art Guild and listed on the

National Register of Historic Places in 1972 and now serves as a museum.

The museum features a variety of exhibits on farming, ranching, local occupations (doctors, lawyers, dentists, firemen). Displays of early Texas life include Indian artifacts and tools, some military memorabilia from the Texas Revolution, World War I and II uniforms and artifacts. Local life of the 1900's is represented by displays of fashion, schools, children's toys, photos and furniture. Photo archives and genealogical information available upon request.
