The 12.2 km (7.6 mi) Mt. Washington Auto Road takes you to the summit of the Northeast's highest peak. Take a guided tour, or drive on your own. If you choose the latter, pick up an audio CD from the ticket office to accompany your drive with information about the geography, history, and lore of the mountain. As you ascend, each turn reveals breathtaking views of the Presidential Range. Your ticket for the road also includes admission to the summit's Extreme Mount Washington experience at the observatory, where you can learn about the mountain's winter. Be aware that the auto road is narrow and winding and doesn’t have guardrails. Nervous drivers should opt for the tour. Use our Gorham trip planning website to add Mt. Washington Auto Road and other attractions to your Gorham vacation plans.

Great experience. Awesome views. Definitely something any visitor to the North Country should do. Why not five stars? Because it would have been nice if we'd known that there was a maximum weight for vehicle occupants. There were six of us and one had to stay behind so the rest could go. Notification of this limitation is buried deep in the FAQ under vehicle weight limits. I had to go searching for it to find it because it's based upon the vehicle size. This should be much more obviously noted. I get that it's for safety, but we absolutely could've brought two cars so we all could've gone up. Just a disappointment. Don't get me wrong, it's fun and definitely worth it, but the poor warning on vehicle passengers really left a sour taste on the otherwise great experience.
Sightseeing...hiking...museums!! can it get any better? I don't think so! This is a great stop when in new Hampshire in the White Mountains! It will give you an all around experience and you will get to learn some very interesting history. Definitely worth the stop, especially if its your first time in the area.
