Must see · Wildlife Area · Nature / Park
Lion's Den Gorge Nature Preserve is a 73-acre public park located in Ozaukee County, Wisconsin, running adjacent to Lake Michigan for 0.7 miles near the village of Grafton and city of Port Washington. It was purchased by the county in 2002 from a private property owner and borders a 44-acre United States Fish and Wildlife Service waterfowl production area. It features over 1.5 miles of gravel and boardwalk trails through white cedar and hardwood forests, wetlands, and Lion's Den Gorge, with some sections of trails offering views of Lake Michigan from atop the nearly 100 foot tall bluffs. Following the "Lion's Den Trail" from the main parking lot takes one all the way through the park, down through the gorge, and finally to the lakeshore. Fishing, hiking, birdwatching, and picnicking are popular activities in the park, and the park contains several diverse habitats for native wildflowers, trees, migratory birds, waterfowl, amphibians and mammals.

  • What a beautiful place. Majority of this location has easy walking trails with beautiful views. Our two year old walked most of the way by himself. The hardest part of the “hike” is the steps down to....  more »
  • Views are absolutely amazing. Wonderful place to walk with family and friends! Also have noticed many, many couples come here for nicer, quieter walks. There are bunches of paths to take, vistas to pause at, and even some tricky descending stairs leading to a peaceful view of Lake Michigan. Make sure to take some water, though - it's a long walk!! And you might want bug spray and sunscreen; it gets very sunny in some places!
  • This place is really beautiful but for some reason, the parking lot seems to fill up quite a bit. There are some beautiful views of Lake Michigan to be seen here. You just need to walk a bit to get down to the actual beach as it is a pretty steep incline to the lake. If you are looking for a place to get pictures done, this is a great option but it is a bit of a drive from Milwaukee some take that into consideration. I would definitely recommend this park to anyone who is into the outdoors and like to take pictures!
