Built on a rock ledge suspended over the Grand Canyon's south rim, Lookout Studio offers some of the best vantage points of the famous landmark. Listed on the National Register of Historic places, the 1914 studio is one of seven buildings in the canyon designed by famed architect Mary Colter, who strove to blend the structure with its natural surroundings using local stone and wood. Explore the building's historic interior, featuring various informative exhibits and a film, and then use the coin-operated telescopes on the outdoor terraces for up-close inspection of the natural spectacle around you. A paved trail nearby makes a great spot to watch for the California condor--North America's largest land bird and a rarity in the skies. The birds use the thermal updrafts of air to cruise along the cliffs. If you're looking for souvenirs, check out the on-site gift shop. Make Lookout Studio a centerpiece of your Grand Canyon National Park vacation itinerary, and find what else is worth visiting using our Grand Canyon National Park day trip planner.
