Grand Portage State Park, Grand Portage

#15 of 142 in Nature in Minnesota
Grand Portage State Park is a state park at the northeastern tip of Minnesota, USA, on the Canada–United States border. It contains a 120ft waterfall, the tallest in the state (though it is on the border with Canada and thus partially in Ontario), on the Pigeon River. The High Falls and other waterfalls and rapids upstream necessitated a historically important portage on a fur trade route between the Great Lakes and inland Canada. This 8.5mi path plus the site of forts on either end are preserved in nearby Grand Portage National Monument. The state park, held by the surrounding Grand Portage Indian Reservation and leased to the state of Minnesota for $1 a year, is the only U.S. state park jointly managed by a state and a Native American band. It is also the only Minnesota state park not owned by the state.

  • Went to Grand Portage State Park on Oct3. The park office was just closing but we were still able to walk the paved path to view the High Falls. Worth a visit!  more »
  • Beautiful falls and walk through the woods to get there. Nice that they have benches for those who need to rest.  more »
  • Beautiful park! Nice welcome center and hiking trails. The falls are amazing! Our entire group hiked up to see the high falls. I will say however, that when we got there a number of us were waiting to use the rest room. A guy was cleaning the ladies room, which I appreciate, but was taking a very long time. I think he could have paused so we could go and finish up when we were done.
  • Great waterfall! The main attraction I'd very fun and easy for the whole family! Watch out about what you hear about the hike to middle falls. Not something you would do in sandals or with elderly or young kids, it's about a hour or more of uphill and downhill hiking, with slippery, rocky terrain! Regardless, very fun!
