Ski Butternut, also known as Butternut Basin, is a ski resort in Great Barrington, Massachusetts, located on Warner Mountain in The Berkshires.
Channing and Jane Murdock took control of the area in 1963, naming the area Butternut Basin after the large groves of butternut trees located in the basin of the mountain. Family friends of the Murdocks', the Kennedys visited Butternut.
The mountain currently features 22 trails, ten ski lifts, two terrain parks, a tubing area, and a PSIA-affiliated ski school. In the off-season, the mountain hosts a number of summer concerts and festivals, including the annual Berkshires Arts Festival.

  • Butternut is an easy, family experience. The staff is friendly and the trails are varied. The best value is mid week but the weekends are fun and casual.

  • Great place for everyone, from beginners to pros. I've skied at Butternut since Mt. Tom closed in 1998. Great snow, 2 lodges so you never feel like it's too crowded to get a snack, tons of parking, tubing on a separate section, terrain park, magic carpets on the beginners slopes (no more J bars!!!) And awesome staff from lift operations, to ski patrol, everyone you're going to meet is going to be great! This is a great place to ski, snow board and have a great winter day. They have snow making capabilities and do an excellent job grooming their trails.
  • We had a great time bringing our Florida babies (aged 5 and 6) snow tubing for the first time. The only reason for 4 stars instead of 5 is the last lane should have been blocked off for safety reasons, and it wasn't. Sure enough, someone got hurt flying off the lane into the wooded area. This could have been prevented. Overall, VERY FUN experience and our little kids loved the magic carpet!
