Clingmans Dome, Great Smoky Mountains National Park

At an elevation of 2,025 m (6,643 ft or 1.25 mi), Clingmans Dome is both the tallest mountain of the Great Smokies and the highest point along the Appalachian Trail. Park your car near the summit and embark on 0.8 km (0.5 mi) walk to the observation tower atop the mountain. Note that while the trail is short and paved, it is very steep. Benches along the way provide a place to rest and catch your breath. The tower's observation platform provides panoramic views of the surrounding area, and handy signs help you identify points of interest. Bring a jacket with you; cold temperatures and rain are common here. • My wife and I love this spot! The hike up is paved but very steep. There are benches and stops along the way to rest but definitely worth it. The views at the top are gorgeous!!  more »
  • The hike up the paved hill is steeper than expected, and due to the altitude, it was a bit tiring. The 360 degree view from the top was spectacular...especially due to the ice frozen to the treetops. ...  more »

  • The steep .5 mile paved walk is well worth the view. There are plenty of points to stop and rest along the way if you are unsure of your ability to make a continuous hike. Do it. You won't regret it.
  • Worth the trip. Nice walk up a paved surface. Plenty of bathrooms at different overlooks. Historical signage explains how this all came to pass. Breath taking views
