Blandwood, Greensboro

#20 of 59 in Things to do in Greensboro
Historic Site · Hidden Gem · Tourist Spot
Blandwood, home of former North Carolina Governor John Motley Morehead is a treasure of architectural and historical significance located in the heart of downtown Greensboro.

The original two-story farmhouse was constructed on the site in 1795, before the founding of Greensboro (1808), and was expanded in the 1820s. In 1844, nationally renowned architect Alexander Jackson Davis designed a prototype Italianate style villa for Governor Morehead, featuring a tall central tower, stucco walls, and symmetrical flanking dependencies. This addition was completed in 1846 and is considered the oldest standing example of Italianate architecture in the United States.

Blandwood was nominated to the National Register of Historic Places in 1970 and received the distinction of being named a National Historic Landmark in 1988.

  • As part of our NC road trip we spent the better half of a delightful afternoon touring Greensboro's Blandwood Estate. Our tour guide and docent, MATT, met us at the entrance and for next hour and half (usually one-hour tour) MATT thoroughly entertained us with lively accounts and unique introductions, impressive insights, and vignettes into the main cast of characters, along with their oil portraits, personal artifacts and furnishings, which MATT did with extraordinary flair to help shaped the history of the premises. A do not miss on the Greensboro leg of our NC journey.
  • As part of our NC road trip we spent the better half of a delightful afternoon touring Greensboro's Blandwood Estate. First time to visit the mansion and we were not disappointed. Our guide was Matt and he was terrific....very personable with a great knowledge of the mansion and the family. This tour was like a History 101 class.
