Bishop's Orchards began operating as a family farm in 1871 (1871). Over the years, Bishop's Orchards expanded to a 313-acre (1.27 km2) farm, with the Bishop family members maintaining control of all duties ranging from corporate decision-making to retail operations to crop maintenance. In 2007, the Bishop family members created a 10-year stock purchase and loan program to ensure a continuation of family ownership.
Bishop's Orchards has attracted tourism via its retail market and seasonal apple- and pumpkin-picking programs; visits by local school groups are also coordinated.

Fresh and local is the best you can get and Bishop's has that in spades. When I was little it had a good selection of year around groceries with fresh seasonal fruits and vegetables. It's grown bigger and better since. With their own ingredients they make wines and hard ciders. They have and ice cream stand, food at the barn, llamas to see, pick your own for many fruits, and so much more. The best farm market in the state, by far. I am absolutely bias.

I used to go here 50 years ago when I was a small child, and it was wonderful then. It’s almost unrecognizable now, but wow! It’s amazing! If you’re in the area it’s got the BEST ice cream, farm fresh local veggies, fantastic prepared foods, gourmet groceries, and friendly service (and… and… and…). Worth a trip from New Haven, or if you’re on your way to New London pull off the freeway and go. You’ll be glad you did.
