Haleakala Crater, Haleakala National Park

#1 of 32 in Nature in Maui
Known primarily for its dramatic sunrises and sunsets, Haleakala Crater is the world's largest dormant volcano, forming more than 75 percent of the island of Maui. Over a million years old, the volcano is locally known as the "House of the Sun," its tallest peak rising up to 3,055 m (10,023 ft) above sea level. You can reach the summit, gaze into the crater, or walk across its floor by hiking up a series of rugged trails. Though there's little chance of an eruption, you must be extremely careful on the steep and often treacherous paths. Check the weather before you go and dress appropriately for cold temperatures at the summit. • Amazing!!! After doing a bike ride down the volcano we then drove back up to the crater at the summit. We both felt a bit sick going up to 10000ft but it was worth it when we got to the top. We did a small journey down into the crater, easier getting down then getting back up. My hubby was getting a cold and found it hard to walk back up but I was fine. Amazing sights from above the clouds, very interesting and Mars like landscape. Would advise not to miss on a trip to Maui!
  • Very spiritual and sacred mountain. A person expecting much more then a sunrise or sunset will feel the bond between history to the present time. Very life changing.
