The Emerald Hollow Mine is the only emerald mine in the world open to the public for prospecting. Nestled snugly in the foothills of the beautiful Brushy Mountains, this North Carolina Emerald mine is located in the small town of Hiddenite, North Carolina. This is recognized as one of the most unique and interesting geological locations on the North American continent.

Host to more than sixty different types of naturally occurring gems and minerals, a virtual treasure trove of gemstones can be found at our gem mine! Many of these are very rare, including emerald, aquamarine, sapphire, garnet, topaz, amethyst, citrine, rutile, and tourmaline, along with an abundance of world class smoky and clear quartz crystals. Hiddenite is also famous as being one of the few places on earth where the very rare gemstone "Hiddenite" can be found!

Each year, thousands of rockhounds, tourists and educational field trip participants flock to this popular North Carolina attraction to experience the thrill of finding rare gemstones in the rough. Whether you are a serious or amateur prospector hoping to fulfill dreams of finding hidden treasures, a student experiencing a "hands on" learning experience or a family seeking quality outdoor recreation, a trip to the Emerald Hollow Mine guarantees a fun and exciting adventure for people of all ages!

Our hours of operation are 8:30am to sunset (ranging from 5:00pm in mid-winter to 8:00pm in mid-summer). We are open every day of the year, except Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. There are RV parks with complete hookups very nearby. Our friendly, knowledgable and helpful staff is always available to answer your questions, offer instructions, and help identify your finds. We also have a complete lapidary shop that will turn your rough gemstones into beautiful cut stones and jewelry.

  • We had a great time! Staff very informative and helpful. We dug awhile, just walked to creek, then bought a bucket of dirt. The experience was great! We did find some gemstones!

  • Very interesting place to visit. Minus one star because we tried digging first. If you're going to dig, you need a lot more insight than we had. Panning from mine supplied dirt was a lot more successful. Friendly helpers in the tent.
  • Have had fun , but do not bring your pets unless they can handle a dog charging a them barking aggressively. They have 2 dogs on property that are running around without leashes. The white terrier looking dog charged my dog multiple times even with my husband setting in the car with him. My dog is not aggressive, but this dog was relentless and sent my dog into protective mode. I really loved the place and people . I'm just not that crazy about that terrier, keeping my fur baby on edge.
