Akaka Falls State Park, Hilo

Experience lush vegetation and towering waterfalls at Akaka Falls State Park. Set out on the paved footpath just off the parking lot for a loop through the park. On this easy, 0.6 km (0.4 mi) walk, you can see tropical plants and stop at viewpoints for two waterfalls, Kahūnā and Akaka. At Akaka Falls, watch water plummet 129 m (422 ft) into a stream-eroded gorge. Consider bringing some bug spray to ward off mosquitos. • Akaka Falls s a State Park and almost free to get in - it costs $1.00 and $5.00 to park if you park in the lot instead of on the road. The Falls are stunning and they provide you with a beautiful walk...  more »

  • These falls feature a rather small parking lot - which is $5 for parking per cat (covers entry fee) - and plenty of parking on the roadside. If you plan on parking on the roadside, you will need to pay the $1 entry fee. They do accept credit card. There is a functioning bathroom and staff on site. Upon entering the trailhead you will see a sign that indicates the trail to the falls is a circular trail. This does, in fact, mean it takes you back to start. Going right takes your to Kahuna Falls and going left takes you to 'Akaka Falls. There is a ton of vegetation and interesting sights to see, so I highly recommend taking the full route regardless of your starting choice. Just a note, Kahuna Falls are quite farther away than the 'Akaka Falls, but still an absolute treat. The 'Akaka Falls are flanked by amazing sweeping cliffs and two other smaller falls. The trail around is fully paved and supported by railing on both sides for most of the trail. Definitely recommend visiting this amazing sight, only a short drive from the Rainbow Falls.
  • So wonderful! One of my favorite waterfalls. We paid like $3 for the two of us to park and enter the trail. The trail was a fairly easy hike with beautiful trees and greenery. It wasn't very busy, which was nice, too. You can take the long hike back and see another waterfall. It was so beautiful! Wear a poncho in case in rains. There are bathrooms at the entrance.
