Create an itinerary including Liliuokalani Gardens
Take a break from Hawaii's busy tourist areas with a visit to Liliuokalani Gardens, situated just southeast of downtown Hilo. The main feature of this 12 hectare (30 acre) park is an Edo-style Japanese garden, one of the largest such features outside Japan. Built in the early 1900s, the garden features several bridges, koi ponds, pagodas, statues, and a traditional Japanese teahouse. Adjacent to the park you’ll find a small picnic area locally known as the "Coconut Island," once the site of an ancient healing temple. Connected to the park by a footbridge, the island offers unobstructed views of downtown Hilo and its picturesque bay. • Beautiful park especially on a nice day. Popular spot for locals on the weekend. The gardens have nice concrete walkways, benches, and lots of shade from large trees. There's also the ocean front areas too with plenty of areas to hang out at. Fishing, swimming, snorkeling, paddling, no waves so its usually very calm waters and clear too. This area is nice for walking and jogging as exercise too. Well maintained with bathrooms and showers. Since its a popular spot, parking can be tough, but enough people come and go for short visits that spots open up regularly.
  • If you visit Hilo, I highly recommend you go visit King Liliuokalani Garden. It is an ornamental Japanese garden with absolutely stunning views. It is very well maintained, and a great park to relax and enjoy the shore. There are 2 beautiful arching bridges over ponds, a little tea house, a few benches, sculptures, some incredible trees, many giant yellow bamboos periodically scattered around, wildlife, flowers, and picnic tables. It is a very good spot to enjoy some fresh air. A big plus is there is no entrance fee and there is plenty of parking spaces. This place was absolutely gorgeous, and definitely worth going to!!!
