The nationally accredited and Smithsonian-Affiliated Lyman Museum was established 80 years ago in the Lyman Mission House, built in 1839 for New England missionaries David and Sarah Lyman.

Today, the collections are on display in two galleries of natural and cultural history exhibits, next door to the historic Mission House. The Mission House, which can be seen on a guided tour, is the oldest wooden building on the Island and on the State and National Registers of Historic Places.

  • Totally surpassed our expectations! Cindy was an excellent guide, providing historical context in a friendly and engaging manner. The exhibits are beautiful and well-maintained. We spent almost 3 hours and came away with a deeper understanding of Hawaiian culture.
  • As we entered the museum we were greeted by a very friendly woman who made us feel welcome. Our tour guide for the Lyman house was funny and informative. The museum has information on Hawaiian wildlife and ecosystems, natural history and Hawaiian history and culture. Great place to learn about the island and its history. The information about the first missionaries was enlightening.
