Learn about one of nature's most destructive forces and see how affected communities cope with the constant threat at Pacific Tsunami Museum. The town of Hilo has been hit by tsunamis numerous times throughout its history, and it's the museum's mission not only to preserve the memory of these events, but also to teach future generations how to minimize the scale of destruction in forthcoming disasters. Visit the exhibits dedicated to various tsunamis that affected both Hawaii and other parts of the world, learn what caused them, and see images of the destruction they left in their wake. Hear the storiesĀ from the museum's docents, some of whom witnessed these events firsthand. For additional information and educational material, stop by the gift shop. • The museum takes seriously the mission of education about tsunami dangers. We learned not only about April 1, 1946, but also other tidal waves in prior years, and in other seas around the world...

  • This is my 3rd time at the Tsunami Museum. It is one of those small yet fabulous museums that you happen upon when traveling and enjoy so much. With an $8 entrance fee, it's a wonderful way to spend an hour or two. The people who work there are as helpful and informative as can be. Great place. Don't miss it.
