Fort Mitchel is an American Civil War fortification at 65 Skull Creek Drive in Hilton Head, South Carolina. It was built in 1861 by Union Army forces as part of the defenses of a coaling station and ship maintenance facility at Seabrook Landing. It was named for Brigadier General Ormsby M. Mitchel, and is a rare surviving example of a semi-permanent fortification built by the Union in the South Carolina Low Country.
The fort site was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2017. Today, it is an historic site that is open to the public.

  • Rich is a wonderful story teller and very knowledgeable. Things that they can improve: Have a square to charge tourist at the actual fort and water for the summer. Oh! Charlie is super funny.
  • Neat little park. You have to enter through a security gate to reach the park. The remnants of the fort a barely recognizable as it has all collapsed in. If you follow the path across the bridge and view the fort from that side you can see where the old moat was and how the dirt was built up to form the fort. The cannons were pretty cool. One of them could still swivel showing how a soldier would take aim during the war. It took us about 5 minutes to see all there was to see at this fort.
