Monument Circle, Indianapolis

4.7
Monument Circle is one of the country's most significant civic spaces, and its reconstruction will be one of the most important urban infrastructure projects the City of Indianapolis has ever undertaken.

The Circle is more than just a landmark in Indianapolis; it is a central hub for our residents, workers and businesses. Its location at the heart of our capitol City links state and city/county government. Millions of eyes are on the Circle as the backdrop to hundreds of events each year. Enhancing the space will continue to position Indianapolis as a city of vision, a city that values community, and a city that is always ready for growth and development.

For years, the City of Indianapolis has spent hundreds of thousands of dollars maintaining Monument Circle. Much of the infrastructure around the Circle is more than 30 years old and failing, including material and utilities beneath the sidewalks and roadway.

The scope of this project includes the total reconstruction of sidewalks, driving lanes, parking lanes and subsurface infrastructure, as well as upgraded storm water and sewer systems. The project design team will focus on activating underutilized areas; reclaiming pedestrian space; incorporating timeless aesthetics; implementing sustainable, “green” infrastructure; and providing specific programming infrastructure – such as fiber-optic connections, specialty lighting, tent tie-down anchors, audio systems and unique traffic control – that will allow for a variety of events to be easily hosted on the Circle.

In addition to the reconstruction itself, the City is working with local stakeholders to develop a programming plan and establish a management entity to ensure continuous activity in the space, not just during city-wide events.

The City is working to secure funding for the first phase of construction which will include Monument Circle, Meridian Street from Ohio Street to Washington Street, and Market Street from Illinois Street to Pennsylvania Street. As additional funding becomes available, the project will extend to provide connections to the Indianapolis Cultural Trail at Market and Alabama streets, the Capitol Building at Market Street and Capitol Avenue, University Park at Meridian and New York streets and Georgia Street.

  • Beautiful statues surrounding the monument tower with various fountains. People were taking wedding photos there too. Lots of great pictures and small gift shop inside.  more »
  • Has horse carriage rides and a chocolate shop with ice cream. Would have been better if not for the loud PA music and shouting soul saver for Jesus. Could be nice place to sit, relax and people watch.  more »
