  • We saw this while checking out the canal. It was a somber memorial, as it should be. It is in a park area along the canal.

  • Beautiful granite and marble memorial dedicated to the sailors of the USS Indianapolis. The sinking of the ship and so many who died unnecessarily has to be one of the biggest disasters of any war...

  • I wanted to see this war memorial ever since I heard of it. It was beautiful. It's located next to a canal and the memorial is surprisingly interesting learning about this ship and it's crew. Definitely check it out.😊
  • An emotionally moving memorial site, imo. A highly condensed summary of the main narrative inscription reads: "THE WORLD'S FIRST OPERATIONAL ATOMIC BOMB WAS DELIVERED BY THE U.S.S. INDIANAPOLIS TO THE ISLAND OF TINIAN ON 26 JULY 1945... THEN... ON 30 JULY 1945 SHE WAS HIT BY TWO TORPEDOES... OF THE 1196 ABOARD, ABOUT 900 MADE IT INTO THE WATER IN THE TWELVE MINUTES BEFORE SHE SANK... SHARK ATTACKS BEGAN WITH SUNRISE OF THE FIRST DAY AND CONTINUED UNTIL THE MEN WERE PHYSICALLY REMOVED FROM THE WATER... ALMOST FIVE DAYS LATER... THE SURVIVORS WERE ACCIDENTALLY DISCOVERED... OF THE 900 MADE IT INTO THE WATER ONLY 317 REMAINED ALIVE. AFTER ALMOST FIVE DAYS OF CONSTANT SHARK ATTACKS, STARVATION, TERRIBLE THIRST, SUFFERING FROM EXPOSURE AND THEIR WOUNDS THE MEN OF THE INDIANAPOLIS WERE AT LAST RESCUED FROM THE SEA."
